Leaving Home

The day has arrived for Adam to start the next new phase of his life.

He was almost first in the queue to pick up his key for halls, the reception at Uni was full of anxious parents, a million milling asian students, cool art lecturers, harassed staff and almost palpable excitement.

His room is shiny new, a little stark but a good canvas on which he can paint his experiences of his first year away.

Eldest brother Dominic met us for an expedition to Ikea, there to argue playfully over the merits of wire versus wood coat hangers and how the difference in price meant an ability to buy a pint on the last day of the month. Adams passion for detail meant we spent 40 minutes on choosing duvet colours and unravelling the mystery that is Ikea sizing.

The harsh reality of independent life struck home at the till, I scuttled away to fetch the car and left Laurel and Hardy to untanlge the potato peeler from the pillows.

By 5pm he was installed, books on shelves, kitchen organised, bed made, rug down and Dom and I crept off to Berts Bar for a well earned pint.

Freshers week next week and then the course proper starts.
