Flame or microwave?

Keiran who runs our village shop assured me that the poppadoms I bought from him would taste much better if I cooked them by wafting them over the gas flame. He demonstrated the wafting motion in the shop. I could also do them in the microwave and he said to try both ways and compare. The microwave is safer but the poppadoms look anaemic.  I will have to go back for another lesson in wafting because they kept catching fire. He was right though, the bits that are not totally burnt do taste better than the anaemic microwave ones.
