its a bicycle, Jim, but not as we know it

Open Doors Day here, and I spent a happy afternoon visiting a church, a museum, a cinema and the Council's 'secret' bunker.

Here's a bicycle from the museum, made in 1842 by Thomas McCall from the design of Kirkpatrick Macmillan, who lived at Keir Mill and invented the pedal cycle.

KM cycled all the way to Glasgow on his bicycle, and knocked down a small child in the Gorbals, for which He was fined 5 shillings. The Glasgow Herald reported the incident, remarking that his invention ' would not supersede the railway.'
