Meet 'Lily' Who Is Not Silly

Was home very late last night, happy &  exhausted.. It isn't every night you go on a bat tour of one of Europe's most famous haunts .The Spandau Zitadelle.
It meant hours of walking in ancient tunnels many steps & my bones know .Yet so worth it .The man in charge is a biologist and his passion for bats is amazing . Here you see two 'Größe Abendsegler.'They can live until 14 years and fly at 50 km/h Top right was in doors and had checked in between the walls . Bottom left is always there but lives downstairs in the other bat cellar .Lily is a bat who had an accident .She broke , let's say her finger very badly .Brought to this place she was helped but now cannot fly well,  hunt & survive .The law in Germany stipulates such animals be put to sleep. However Lily was granted permission to live and she is a joy Her love of meal worms is something to behold .We saw tiny water bats in cosy holes .Other areas are sectioned off now and soon as more and more come indoors to hibernate nobody will be allowed in .Listed building as it is ,the authorities allow so much moisture in. Bats need it or they would dehydrate during the winter sleep. In December at least 10, 000 will be sleeping safely in these tunnels and brick work .
