XM645

It's 37 years this month since XM645 exploded over the town of Zabbar in Malta. Today I visited the Zabbar Sanctuary Musuem. A fascinating museum with exhibts from hundreds of years BC to the present day including photographs and wreckage from the Vulcan which was scattered through the town, on rooftops etc.
Only one casualty on the ground due to a broken electrical cable killing her but there were 7 crew on board, 5 of which perished. The two in the pilots seats were able to eject.

The Blip is a photograph of a photograph taken by Joe Ciliberti as the Vulcan was taking back to the air after a very heavy landing which sheared off the port undercarriage. The fuel tank was ruptured and she flew off with the wing in flames to attempt another circuit and landing. Minutes after this photograph was taken she exploded over the town.

If you ever visit Malta this museum is a must see. amazing artefacts and only 2 Euros entrance, worth many times that much.
