Changing behaviours

I snapped this a few minutes ago in our University area where parking is at a premium. Not only are many cars on double yellow lines, they are over the corner and on the footpath, impeding pedestrians and creating a barrier for those with sight or physical impairment. There are laws and processes to protect people, the laws are clear, both being displayed physically - on signs - as well as written in the Highway code. Despite the law, that scaffolding which is meant to support our society, bad behaviour persists. Laws can define our responsibilities and freedoms in certain circumstances, but rarely alter behaviours. We collude with laws we agree with and ignore those we don't. "I've only parked here for a  moment". For me at least, above the laws of state, are values which we should hold as individuals, built for relationships and those include generosity, grace and caring for others. So even if the highway code and double yellows didnt exist, we would park (and drive) holding to those core values. Thing is , we don't. Laws are necessary because we can justify bad behaviours in us, while ridiculing it in others. So, next time you think of parking, driving, acting or speaking without thinking... STOP and consider the impact of what you are about to do or say on others. Allow your actions to be guided by grace and generosity. It's infectious!
