Rhubarb

The answer to yesterday's teaser relates to the dominant local crop until recently. Hops are grown in hop gardens and they grow up a lattice of strings which are held up on hop poles. The northernmost pole in a garden is the north pole and there might also be a south, east and west pole. I'm told that farmers might mark these poles as distances would be measured from them. I got all this from a local farmer when I was buying logs one day.
