Close Call

Brush fire on the outskirts of town. There are apartment houses just on the other side of the ravine to the right.

We decided to drive up the coast for an apple tasting at Wilder Ranch State Park, but encountered a gridlock going north out of town. Turns out a section of the highway was closed because of a wildfire. We were able to detour around and get to the park, and by the time we came home a couple hours later they had the fire under control. Thank you Cal Fire!

The Rare Fruit Growers hosted the tasting--over 60 kinds of apples were on display, ranging from sweet to tart, and there was a steady parade of people sampling all the textures and flavors. Some varieties are hundreds of years old. The growers were promoting grafting as a sure way to insure a true crop; I don't think I want to try it at this stage of the game.  We already have a few of the varieties in our garden, but each of us picked a couple of new kinds to plant if we can ever figure out where to put them.
