Cramond

On the way back to Aberdeen we make a halt a few miles from Edinburgh at the village of Cramond. This village lies on the outskirts of Edinburgh on the way to the Forth Bridge. It is another place I have not been previously and makes a convenient stopping point for breakfast.

The River Almond flows in to a small harbour, though only one yacht remained in the water, all the others were parked up for the winter. Cramond was the site of a large Roman fort and harbour guarding the eastern end of the Antonine wall.

The village was briefly a small industrial centre with several mills, and this can be seen in the architecture of several of the older buildings. Today it is a desirable suburb of Edinburgh, though next to the water the City feels very far away.

The photograph bottom left shows the causeway leading out to Cramond Island. This seems to be a popular walk as we saw several people heading out over the causeway. As the causeway is covered at night tide walkers need to be sure to get back before being cut off by the tide.
