Red-bellied Woodpecker

Back to the Fort River Refuge at mid-morning after two rainy days. The three inches plus have at least restored water to a key marshy area.  It was a superb fall day, cool with brilliant sun. Almost no birds until near the end, when a number of woodpeckers appeared--mainly downies, but also this red-bellied; he stayed a bit coy and this is the best I could get (it does show some characteristically faint red in front).  The staghorn sumac (see the extra) is beginning to droop, but backlit by the sun it is still stunning.
