What a day! When I got up this morning I noticed a strange smell which turned out to be from a leak in the water tank which had been drained and refilled on Wednesday. We immediately turned off the water supply and central heating before phoning the gas service contract people, explaining the situation and the fact that we had to be in Melton Mowbray this evening.

Guy managed to pursuade them that they needed to send somebody out to fix it before lunch time. Eventually the engineer arrived and he thought he had found the source of the problem (a cracked valve). So we left him to sort it out and asked him to let himself out of the house and lock up. Fortunately I had the foresight to leave him my mobile phone number. He phoned as we were driving south with bad news. The leak could not be fixed and he had to order a new tank for us which will not be fitted until next Friday! In the meantime we have no central heating and no hot water - and cold weather from the arctic is forecast for Sunday/Monday!

We eventually got to our destination late afternoon. We needed to have an evening meal before giving our talk to the photographic society so we walked to the centre of town and found that only Pizza Express and a couple of grotty looking pubs were serving food earlier than 6 or 6.30pm. As we needed to be at the meeting venue by 7 pm we had to be ordering a meal before 6 pm so Pizza Express it had to be. Remember that Guy is alergic to milk! Fortunately there was a dairy free salad available and also a vegan pizza.

When we arrived we had a very warm and welcoming reception from the photographic society so that cheered us up. We had to cancel a talk to them earlier this year due to Guy having a really nasty virus. When the Chairman gave his vote of thanks he said it had been worth the wait.

Earlier when we were walking to the town centre I spotted this metal wall art celebrating local history by depicting local features and buildings in Melton Mowbray.
