Belted Galloway

I managed to get both pieces of work finished this morning, so Chris and I were able to go to a walk round Castor Hanglands, led by the Langdyke Trust. It was supposed to be partly a fungus foray, but the very dry conditions have largely put a halt to fungal development and we only saw a handful of specimens. The best area for fungi proved to be the unimproved grassland, which is grazed by these wonderful dun-coloured Belted Galloway cows. This breed is often used for conservation grazing as they're well-suited for rough grazing land and will utilise coarse grasses other breeds would shun. They're able to maintain a good condition on less than ideal pasture, and produce high-quality beef on grass alone
