The Edge of the Wold

Curlew

Returning to the theme of small birds in big landscapes, a solitary curlew feeds at the edge of a creek where Morecambe Bay meets the headland at Park Point.

Gus and I had yomped out here in the hope of a sunset, getting lost as usual in Copridding Wood, only to find when we eventually arrived that the sun had settled into a bank of cloud and the light was falling fast.

It was a good day though which emphasised my returning fitness, this was the third walk of the day after two walks over Arnside Knott. I was keen to complete the third walk before darkness fell and the fireworks started. Poor Gus has become quite terrified by the flashes and bangs since we were close to some exploding rockets last New Year's Eve. The big display on the Arnside Pier is far enough away from home not to cause too much upset, but the neighbours' fireworks reduced him to a quivering wreck. It is odd how dogs become sensitised, when he first came to live with us, he was indifferent to them, always a picture of calm. Tonight there will doubtless be a repetition, so we are off now for his last walk of the day before sunset.

Back blipped on 5 November 2017.
