The Endurance nipped in the ice

I saw this at an exhibition at the National Library on Shakleton's epic Antartctic voyage. The negatives taken by Frank Hurley (the expedition's photographer) had been digitised and printed - large - in most cases. This is one of the negatives which comes out well in its own right.

The photos in the newspaper (which is the extra photo) were taken from prints carried by Shackleton on his rescue mission from Elephant Island to South Georgia and thereafter to the Falkland Islands, where they were posted to the UK. At the point when this newspaper article appeared, the rest of Shackleton's party were still on Elephant Island.

I'm fascinated by Shackleton’s voyage in its own right and also as compared with Scott's expedition. Shackleton didn't achieve what he set out to do, but came back a hero with all his men alive, whereas Scott did achieve his goal (although Amundsen got there first) and all five men died on the return journey.
