Common Enchantments

Veterans Day

Yesterday I went to the little town of Baggs, Wyoming to see if the little stop and shop grocery store had some fresh green veggies my body was craving (and I did find asparagus!).  Baggs is a small SMALL town, population 430 and only has 2 paved streets..one going north and south, one headed east.  All the other streets are dirt..even those going to the small school and library.  I don't really know what these people do to make a living, probably travel to Craig 40 miles away, or to Rawlins, 60 miles away or work for ranchers or possibly in the oil fields.   There is a very marked lack of "new" and improved in the town.   If it wasn't for the gas station and one car wash, you would think you were back in the early 1900's.

But this town so exemplifies the small town America persona.  Two young women were placing American flags on each wooden power pole along the main part of town on each side of the street in honor of Veterans Day which is today, a day set aside to honor people who served in our military.    The pride in America and the American way of life is very prevalent in the small towns that we see traveling across the country to get from South Carolina to Colorado.

The media needs to show some news about the real America and its many ordinary people who are not complaining about their lot in life.  They own their life and are happy in it.  I waved at these ladies, one on a ladder, the other handing her the flag and they both smiled really big and waved back at me.   They did not have to place flags on poles, they could have been sitting at home complaining about being bored or about their lot in life.   But I think they are the real thing..people that care about their fellow man and their country.

Thankful for all the men and women who gave years of their lives (and possibly their life) to serve in our military to protect the freedoms that we have here in the USA and for those in other countries.

Take time today to say thank you to a Vet!
