Charity Bridge

Some of us went along this afternoon to a charity bridge session. This time it was held in Lichfield at Charles Darwin's Grandfather's house. The house is provided free with all proceeds going to the Friends of Darwin House. Quite a memorial to this man.. The three spires of the Cathedral can be clearly seen behind the house.
Erasmus Darwin was born in the early 18th Century and went on to become a well known and respected physician.. He was also an inventor but fought shy of claiming rights to some his creations.. So he persuaded one or two of his close friends to take credit so as not to tarnish his reputation. It where the 'Lunatick' Society originated. His progeny were many - about 14 children I believe !!
His son, Robert, was also a doctor and because of his immense weight, and girth, had a rounded section cut out of the dining table to allow him to sit in comfort. Weighing in at a mere 24 stone his burly coachman used to test the floors of some of the dwelling the doctor visited to ensure his safety.
The great man - Charles - is a topic for another occasion..
