COMMON LAND

Strensall Common, just a few miles North East of York has a number of different habitats. Wet heath, dry heathland, birch and oak woodland and a scattering of scots pine and has more than 150 plant species.
It covers an area of more than 5km2 with 60 bird species recorded, including curlew, whinchat, green and great spotted woodpecker. Among the many insects are green and purple hairstreak butterflies, dark bordered beauty moth, bush cricket and glow worms, mammals include fox and harvest mouse. It has a section set aside as a nature reserve which is a special area of conservation.
The MOD have another area which is set aside for military training, including a shooting range.
