Eriskay Pony

The lass down the road has 5 put Eriskay ponies on the croft opposite my house. They are Europe's most rare breed of pony and the breed was almost lost back in the 1970s. Traditionally they were used for essential croft work, hauling seaweed (which was used as to fertilise the land) and for carting the peats. When I chatted with Rosie she told me that they don't do well when housed indoors or fed - they are very hardy and just get their food from grazing.

I took this photo this afternoon during a brief spell of sunshine.
