My favourite course this semester has been looking at spirituality and ministry through the writings of Henri Nouwen, a Dutch priest and successful academic who gave up a tenured position at Harvard to live in a L'Arche Community serving people with intellectual disabilities.

The theme of tonight's class was downward mobility. The contrast is with the 80's phrase, and aspiration, to be 'upwardly mobile' - reflecting an attitude of 'greed is good' and 'it's all about me'. Being downwardly mobile, as I understand it, therefore, is a different approach - one of 'all of us together'. The name is a challenging one, but it is about asking us to be less 'me' and more 'we'.

The picture of tonight was taken at college - it is often the little details that make all the difference.
