Dinner tonight to celebrate the first day of holidays (hooooray!) and junior's choice which is a New York cut steak and chips.
The humble chip...what a classic and according to my go to 'food yore book' ...originated in France and gets a mention in Dickens' 'Tale of Two Cities' as 'husky chips of potatoes fried with some reluctant drops of oil.'

Reluctant drops of oil??...not in any chippie I've known!
A definite treat regardless of the various monikers...chips, french fries pommes frites, finger chips or pont-neuf potatoes.
