Taylors Mistake Bay

The Lyttelton Times in 1865 said that this bay was originally called Vincent's Bay, and more recently Taylors Mistake, owing to the master of a vessel running in here during the night-time, thinking he was about to pass over the Sumner Bay.

Taylors Mistake, or Te Onepoto, is popular with swimmers, surfers and walkers, The narrow winding road down to the bay often has its fair share of near misses in the summer, with cars travelling a tad too fast, up and down. It's just over the hill from Sumner, so it wasn't too far for us to go over there this afternoon for a walk. We'd done our fair share, and more, of weedeating today! What a difference it's all making too.

The narrow tongue of rock leading out into the sea, in the lower middle of the image, is a Magmatic dyke, or dike (in geological usage), formed when magma intruded into a crack then crystallized, leaving this formation - the result of a volcanic eruption a long time ago.
