Clan Jetties

Georgetown is much more Chinese than you might expect of Malaysia. They were the largest group of settlers and it's evident everywhere.

We walked from the hotel down to the jetties to see what goes on there. These water villages are over a century old and each jetty is named after a Chinese clan. The Chew Jetty is the most tourist-friendly with the most stilt-houses, the longest walkway and a temple that is worth seeing. It's a veritable warren of wooden buildings selling all sorts of goods aimed at the tourist including an enthusiastic seller of durian ice cream. Not for me thanks. There is a notice by the lift in the hotel lobby forbidding people to bring them in (see extra). The problem is that the air-con picks up the scent/stink and spreads it throughout the hotel. I gather that some people think it's gorgeous smell but most of us think it smells like raw sewage (or a decomposing body).

My main blip was taken from an alleyway we walked up before Chew Jetty which gave me a view of this fisherman on the end of a small jetty. With the angle of the sun there was very little colour, so I've converted it to black and white. I've added a few more from today to the album which you can see here if you'd like.
