With mountains like these

Abisko Aurora

We headed for Narvik today, with a couple of stops on the way including the battle site in the mountains and the shores of the fjord with a view of the new bridge. A local hotel provided views of the City from their roof top bar (closed) and the petrol station provided sustenance. It was hard not to doze off on the journey home in a nice warm van.

After a short rest, Dimitri cooked us smoked reindeer stew and we toasted marshmallows in the hut, but there was an alert from the owner Klas as we started to eat, the aurora was starting. It's quite difficult juggling gloves, remote, tripod, reindeer stew in Sami eating pots.

So with the camera set up and dinner inside us we set off in the sledges and skidoos for the lake where there was a fire lit on the shores of one of the islands. We had to get a late skidoo as there were quite a few guests going down and as we waited there were great swirls of green and pink above our heads. I got one shot with the Canon but it wasn't my favourite.

Down on the lake there was chat and a glow from the fire reflecting so many nationalities. Play in the snow, a gas of bubbly for everyone, a slightly calmer aurora playing with us and then some midnight fireworks before we rode home. Mike and I hitched back as the sledges were full, Mike in box towed behind one of the guides!

This shot was just before midnight. I am posting it as I think I might get better with the Canon later tonight, but for all the preparation and so on, the iPhone did a stunning job.
