Bigland Barrow

A glorious winter's day with lots and lots of sunshine though accompanied by a cold northerly wind. We chose a local walk today and headed up Bigland Barrow one of Wainwright's outlying fells which is just outside Newby Bridge. It has two summits. The first provides an excellent view of the south end of Windermere and beyond to the high fells of the central Lakes. The second has an interesting manmade adornment as pictured in the blip. It is a wartime observation tower and is enclosed in a large walled enclosure that strangely contains only rough uncultivated moor and numerous swamps one of which amusingly Mr B chose to fall over in. I cannot imagine what they might have needed to observe from up there!
