Winter Reading…

‘84 Charing Cross Road’ by Helene Hanff

“This book is the very simple story of the love affair between Miss Helene Hanff of New York and Messrs Marks and Co, sellers of rare and secondhand books, at 84 Charing Cross Road, London. Told in a series of letters in ‘84 Charing Cross Road’ and then in diary form in the second part ‘The Duchess of Bloomsbury Street’, this true story has touched the hearts of thousands.” Amazon

A bitterly cold, grey day; definitely not the sort of weather for hanging around at bus stops, but that’s what I did, waiting around an hour in total, for the four buses that took me to and from my book group meeting in Bath. Thankfully C’s house was a lovely warm sanctuary from the biting weather outside, and with the log stove burning and a delicious cake on offer, we had a cosy afternoon discussing our latest book, one that we would all thoroughly recommend, along with the film of the book starring Anne Bancroft and Anthony Hopkins.
