day 2

day 2
Our first full day on safari and a long list of sightings from the 2 game drives and lunch on a boat. Our guide Mpoto has over 20 years of experience in this area of the Selous Game Reserve. The game reserve is the largest in Africa, about the size of Switzerland, but 90% is given over to hunting. The decline in rhino and elephant has made the current President of Tanzania begin to outlaw hunting. Fortunately the area we are in the animals are very relaxed with people around.
The highlights had to be vultures finishing off a baby impala, elephant, lion (hidden in bush) all of the African mammals and so many beautiful birds including 3 species of kingfisher. Sundowner drinking G&T under a tree with a Fish Eagle in it was a real thrill.
Our camp is very luxurious and our huge thatched roof tent overlooks a large lake teaming with so many crocs and hippos, Whilst having lunch on the boat a croc in one fast movement caught and ate a huge fish.

extras; pied kingfisher, stork fishing, black-winged stilt, vultures, warthog
