James Smith & Sons

A slice of Victorian London thrives on New Oxford Street. A five-minute walk from Tottenham Court Road station, James Smith and Sons Umbrella Shop has remained largely unchanged since it moved here in 1857 (the shop was originally located in Foubert Place, off Regent Street, where it opened in 1830).

Inside, James Smith and Sons sells every conceivable type of men's and women's umbrellas and parasols, as well as made-to-measure walking sticks (fitted while you wait). Given the heritage of the brand, prices are surprisingly affordable - walking sticks are cut to length from £30. Others, more prohibitive, with some antique and bespoke items costing thousands of pounds.

Mostly I was impressed by the quiet and dignified service - so gratifying. All weather customer care.
