Sgwarnog: In the Field

Bottle

It was a pleasant surprise to get a little sunshine over lunchtime, enough to make the light down at the dam a bit more interesting.

The heron was tucked away in its usual corner while a cormorant patrolled the lake. We don't seem to have as many goosanders this winter but I may just be down at the wrong time of day. I bumped into a kestrel and a bullfinch too.

In the woods I went exploring in a holly thicket and found a nice old bottle, complete with stopper (extras). The bottle and the stopper are both embossed with Woodhead Bros Ltd, Elland, which (I have since learned) was a soft drink company absorbed into the Webster's Brewery business in the 1950s. Do any of you recall drinking Woodhead's lemonade or ginger ale? The stopper looked partly plastic so I was guessing it's from the 60s or 70s but having just nosed around a bit, it may well be a vulcanite screw stopper such as those discussed here by a London mudlarker.

Some enterprising soul is selling such a bottle on eBay for a princely £8, but there's no stopper. Tenner anybody :)
