Ferry across el río

The return ferry to Colonia Del Sacramento in Uruguay involved challenges such as rough water, screaming children and the need to spend up remaining Argentinian pesos.

In order to maintain itself sustainably, Colonia appears to have sacrificed the temptation to develop rapidly and take in tourist dollars. A much different vibe than in Cabo Polonio last week, but a similar commendable attitude to development from the Uruguayan tourism authorities.

The weather on arrival in Colonia was fairly miserable and windy, more reminiscent of the west coast of Scotland. I doubt early Portuguese and Spanish settlers came ashore on such a day.

I decided there was little that could be done except batten down in a café with chocolate cake and hot chocolate. When the rain abated, I strolled the streets and the town does possess a nice timeless feel. Except for the red cars.
