Beach Camp Club

This was the centre of social life.

The main attraction for me was the swimming pool which over 60 years later is exactly the same as it was then, except that the two diving boards have gone. One a springboard and one a (for us at the time) very high tower. I was to lose half a front tooth diving in from one of the boards and managing to hit the bottom with my mouth!

The smaller annex on the right was the bar, open plan with drinks dispensed to those sitting outside around the pool and inside with chairs. Always remember fresh oysters being served with Tabasco sauce. I was always very suspicious of these slimy things and also remember coming out in a rash after trying one - my last one for many years.

The large hall on the left was a more or less closed large room where dances,  bridge competition events and Father Christmas was greeted by the children, the rest open on two sides for an airier, shaded casual sit down with padded armchairs and tables.

Nearby a tennis and squash court. The school was almost opposite. A little way down the road there was an extra cricket pitch with a two-story pavilion.  Several miles away was the golf course which my father built around 1957/8.
