The dropped stitch

across the sea to Holm

Did a bit of work this morning in snowy Kirkwall.

I stopped on the way back to look at the little nissen-like huts next to the Italian Chapel. Built during the Second World War by Italian prisoners of war who were working on the Churchill Barriers, the chapel is itself two nissen huts, joined end to end. A very friendly and helpful custodian told me I was her first visitor of the day, (it was after midday), and some days at this time of year she doesn't see anyone at all. It will be very different once the tourist season starts, of course.

She was pleased to have a chat and talk about the construction of her 'office' which is really a camping pod which has been cleverly adapted to look from the outside like a nissen hut and so be appropriate for its position on this historic site.

I took the photo looking back across number 1 barrier to the village of Holm.
