Beggaring Belief!

Just when you thought (hoped?) they might have run out of ideas, Yeovil found another novel way to lose a game in the dying minutes this afternoon.

Having been the better of two distinctly average teams for most of the match and scorned a number of scoring opportunities, we conceded a goal to a free kick midway through the second half. After that we struggled to break Chesterfield (just below us in the League) down until we equalised with a great strike out of nothing with ten minutes left.

We then went all out for a win but in the 3rd of 4 minutes of added time our 'star' player (i.e. he's about to be bought by another club) thought he'd been fouled and stopped playing, waiting for the ref's whistle, the ref waved play on, their player kicked the ball hopefully upfield, our goalkeeper rushed out of the penalty area, somehow missed the ball completely and left their striker to roll the ball into an empty net for the winner.

To add stupidity to incompetence, our star player ran half the length of the pitch to complain, apparently barged into the ref and was sent off. Not only does he miss the FA Cup game against Man Utd (he was on their books as a youth player so will be very disappointed about that) his automatic 3 match ban is likely to be increased if he did barge the ref and I suspect the club who were going to buy him might be having second thoughts.

Beam me up, Scotty!
