Dr. DiAngelo and Rev. Bill Sinkford

A quote from Ijeoma Oluo was on the screen as we entered the sanctuary:  “I don’t want you to understand me better. I want you to understand yourselves. Your survival has never depended on your knowledge of white culture. In fact, it’s required your ignorance.”
Dr. Robin DiAngelo was the guest speaker at the Unitarian church today and her topic was “Seeing the Racial Water.” “Racism is a structure, not an event,” she began.  By owning  our racism (inherent to those of us who are members of the dominant white culture in America)  we can begin to dismantle those structures.
