Sgwarnog: In the Field

Hound

Another of the thirty five statues of monarchs that adorn Bradford's City Hall. This king comes complete with faithful hound.

I invite your speculation as to which monarch this is.

I became familiar with him at an early age as he came to a sticky end a few miles from my Mum's home village, although the stone commemorating the fact is a few miles further away. Was it bad luck, or lack of wisdom?

There, that's enough clues for you.

OK. a few days have gone by, so I should reveal the answer: William II, or William Rufus, the second Norman king of England. He died in a hunting accident in the New Forest, as commemorated by the Rufus Stone. William I is a few feet along to the left, as blipped previously.
