Dwarf iris

A bitter wind today, so I just went out quickly to get this blip. A couple of days ago I noticed that a few dwarf irises were flowering in a pot we had abandoned around the side of the house last year, as the tulips it contained hadn't really come to anything much. I'd forgotten there were also irises in there. It's quite startling to see something this colourful in January/February, that's not one of the many yellow flowers that are typical of spring. Crocuses are of course often a striking blue/mauve too, but these irises seem a bit unlikely at this time of year. I suppose they originate in the eastern Mediterranean and middle east, so that may explain it. These have been moved to a better position for the duration of flowering, but then they'll be going back to join the others who haven't earned a prime spot.
