Beneath Biscay

Chain reaction

Cold and wet weather continuing and doesn't look likely to improve for a while. Much of Spain is now under snow but as usual we haven't got it here on the north coast. Nevertheless there are a dozen or so roads closed and several score of roads where snow chains are currently compulsory, all mainly here in Asturias and in neighbouring Cantabria.

So, since I haven' got any chains for the new car yet I did a little research then drove over to the shopping centre near Oviedo to buy some chains that looked good.

Bad weather, react by getting some chains, "Chain reaction" ... geddit? Oh, OK, never mind.

Appearing relatively easy to fit being among the main criteria. Sadly they didn't have the right size for my tyres.

So a quick look in a nearby supermarket, but nothing, then a wizz around Ikea to get some ideas for re-furnishing our living room. Due to the room's layout however, most of the furniture wouldn't fit.

So, not much in the way of ideas. Then back home, with a meagre haul of swag. A new €6 elasticy belt from Primark (hopefully my diet will make make those a necessity of the past before long) and a waste paper bin and a pack of batteries from Ikea. The usual.

Back home for lunch. Then a bit more research and plumped for a different set of chains and ordered them from Amazon. Quite a bit more expensive, but anything that could help to avoid frostbite while fitting them is worth. Will have to practice fitting them when they arrive, oh and buy a pair of gloves to keep with them. I found a Youtube video of somebody fitting the same model of chains as I have bought, in the snow. I bet his hands were smarting by the time he got them on.

Then an afternoon and evening of painting the living room. Got it more or less finished bar the final touches.

Finally took the rubbish out and went for a walk to clear the smell of paint from my head. Took  a few pictures, including this one of the entrance to Gijón's Plaza Mayor. Best viewed large.

So endeth Saturday.
