Deerhurst

Explored the ancient village of Deerhurst and especially liked the story of Odda's Chapel featured. Built in 1056 by local Earl Odda, its conscription stone was found in the 1600s buried in an orchard in the village but not until the 1800s was the chapel's whereabouts located. In 1865, the then owner of a medieval farmhouse was chipping off some outside plaster and discovered his house was built onto and had consumed  an ancient building that turned out to be Odda's Chapel. Despite alterations over the years, the nave being used as a kitchen in Tudor times and a bedroom built in in the chancel, it is surprisingly well preserved.  Deerhurst 's main church is the Saxon St Mary's which contains the best preserved Saxons font in the country (see extra) dating from 9th C. That too had been used by local farmers and was discovered in 1843 being used as a cattle trough. Deerhurst is a tiny  village next to the River Severn  another extra), very peaceful but prone to flooding.
