The dropped stitch

Patchwork inspiration?

This beautiful tiled floor is in what used to be the Imperial Hotel, Kirkwall. An inner glass door has the name and a magnificently detailed crest engraved on it.

In its heyday it must have been a very grand hotel. I found a photo online from 1902 showing it decorated to celebrate the Coronation of King Edward VII. Some time in the 1930s the building became the home of the local Education Offices. Now it is used by a number of local businesses.

And the reason I have to pop in and admire this lovely building now and again... it has the finest meter cupboard I have ever seen: floor to high, high ceiling of meters. A treasure trove for meter readers!
