New Zealand Red Admiral

Unlike the common yellow admiral this red admiral is endemic to New Zealand. It is bigger than the yellow, and has a larger, darker presence when it flies by. I rarely see them here and they are usually flying through without stopping. I was surprised to see it resting on a rosebush. Its preferred food is the native onga onga, a particularly vicious stinging nettle that does not grow in this area.
