I did use my zoom lens, but was literally in Snowy's face (you can see me reflected in his eye -- the white speck is my hair). 

He fled from the bird feeder once he realized just how close I was, but came back several times... and the scenario was repeated, each time.

There was a newcomer in the back yard today with an interesting white "mustache" below its nose -- no name yet. (extra photo) 

(I gave Snowy that name because his fine long tail has white hairs around the edges, making him easy to tell apart from the other native Douglas squirrels we sometimes see in our neighborhood.)
