Newcastle Downunder

Catho Jetty

I haven't been down to Catherine Hill Bay for a long while. It was named after a schooner that sank there in 1867. This is the old jetty where they used to load coal onto ships which would then take it to Newcastle. Oh yes, coals to Newcastle. It was the only ship that didn't need a pilot when entering the Harbour. The jetty was built in either 1873 or 1888. It hasn't been used for a long time in my memory and there are regular threats that it is a safety hazard and will need to be dismantled.

It has been cloudy all day and threatening to rain but it only mustered a few spits. Much cooler than the 38 C it got to yesterday.
