The Edge of the Wold

Coalescence

There was a good show at Leighton Moss this evening. The starling flock is said to be about 60,000 strong. The murmuration started without a murmur, with small groups flying in from all directions, then gradually over 45 minutes it grew visibly and audibly into a breathtaking, heart stopping flock that flowed across the sky expanding. contracting, spiralling and gyrating almost as a single giant organism.

Looking at this now, it makes me think of the weird and wonderful slime moulds where amoeba-like individuals come together and coalesce into a mushroom-like fruiting body.

I've been having a blip break this last week, so my apologies that I have not replied to the many comments, stars and hearts on the chapter end blip a week ago. Thank you for all the kind words.
