The cat conformed to our expectations

She watched the cat in its square patch of sun. It was nice here. She had never lived with a cat before. She had never lived with someone who had a cat before. She stretched out her arm and stroked the cat’s fur. The fur was surprisingly hot. The cat purred and moved against her hand but didn’t open its eyes.

The square of sunshine, now stretched into a trapezium, had moved. The cat rose, stretched and picked its way over to a new resting spot. Following the sun.

Soon, it would be time for her, too, to move on.
