1,125 miles short of the longest street

For decades, Yonge Street was known (and recognized by the Guinness World Records folk) the longest street in the world - some 1,178 miles. Alas,  in 1999, it was demoted, truncated, and humiliated to just 53 miles long. That's 1,125 miles short of what it used to be. It goes from the shore of Lake Ontario (where this historical plaque is located at The Toronto Star building at 1 Yonge Street in Toronto) to the United States border at Minnesota (specifically, Rainy River, Ontario). It seems Yonge Street only truly goes to Barrie, Ontario then becomes Highway 11 which, apparently, is a whole different thing records wise. It's still considered Ontario's "Main Street" or "Main Street Ontario" if anyone cares about such things. Any way you slice it, it's still a long way to hitch-hike.

1,178 miles = 1,896 kilometres
