Englishman in the Balkans

Krempita

I live in a country whose history has meant that it's present day culture reflects the influences of that complex history.

Food is great proof of that.

I will certainly be posting quite a lot of journal entries about food.

Today is Krempita. Krempita, as far as i am aware, was brought to the region by the Austro-Hungarian empire after the Ottomans were driven out of the Western Balkans finally, at the start of the 20th century.

To quote Wikipedia, "Krempita is a chantilly and custard cream cake dessert
popular in several Central European countries.

There are many regional variations, but they all include a puff pastry base and custard cream".

I am enjoying my Krempita bought from a slastičarna (pastry shop) in Banja Luka, with a cup of coffee.

Pure luxury :)
