Englishman in the Balkans

Sunsets

The winter looks like it's finally surrendered to the spring thaw.

Huge sighs all round!

The snow and ice that has laid for sometime, is now water, literally cascading off the hills down into the River Vrbas that runs through the valley northwards to join the River Sava at Gradiška.

Last night we experienced some light flooding quite near us, but today the roads are all but clear.

Spring floods are particularly painful in certain areas of the country, not only for the misery flood damage causes, but also that uncleared minefields shift, due to the high water.

Mine contamination is one of the ongoing evils, reminding everyone of the conflicts of the mid to late 1990's.

It's a massive risk to mark these areas, let alone de-mine them. With markings washed away and actual mines relocating, well, the result doesn't bear considering.

Just so you know, we don't have mines near us, and the areas still contaminated are extremely small.

Bosnia and Herzegovina is a very very safe country to visit. You really should come.

Back to Spring.

Our sunsets are stunning, especially now and in the summer. Sunrises are also impressive.

To be able to see this from the comfort of my front door is not lost on me.
