Selfies from the Brink

Isabella

Before I present some of the most awesome entries to EP17, a short update on Isabella's situation at her new school, since so many of you wished her all the best in her initial struggles: The first two or three weeks were awfully difficult for her. She's had some traumatic experiences in her previous schools in our former town, and it took her a while to understand that this is a new school with new teachers and new students, and that bad experiences don't have to repeat themselves. Another thing that scared her a bit was that the children here in Arraial are very independent and self-conscious, sassy even. But now I'm glad to announce that she's doing fine and is becoming a bit cheeky herself. Today's blip? That's her talking and laughing about her new friends.

Experimental Photography Challenge EP17 seems to have been a real challenge. Some seemed uncomfortable with this challenge and reluctant to take exposure to a radical level. Not every subject or situation is suitable for this technique, but - as you can see from the entries to this challenge - it can produce some amazing results.

Here are some of my favourites (in no particular order):
suejay50 - a leaf reduced to it's delicate structure, barely visible but undeniably recognizable.
Picturemull - stunning composition, pure light and darkness.
Justtryin - perfect use of snow.
freespiral - similar to suejay50's, but totally different effect.
Flashcube - that eye...
Apothecary7 - an example where low-key makes perfect sense.
Doingok - you can almost feel the white cold hitting your face.
Alsacienne - the pictures Michèle takes of artistic performances are works of art in their own right. I love how she uses light, darkness, contrasts (and timing!) to capture the personality of "her" artists. (Here's another one that fits the challenge even better, but was taken before the challenge.)

Hearts will be awarded today and tomorrow.
