J having celebrated his 5th birthday on 2nd February was now old enough to be put to toil on the land.

In partner look, we set about the task.

For me, the quite large plot was a very welcome change from work. An hour or so after work in the summer pottering around helped to wind down. Only much later did I discover how unimportant work is in the greater scheme of things.

J was not to develop his gardening talents much but his sister Kate did, even studying it at college with success and now as I post in 2018, she has a huge garden of her own with immaculate vegetable beds, orchard. hedges and grass. Does help she is married to another horticulture expert but she is the driving force. He earns his money ensuring others can drive off on immaculate tees.

And Kate is now vegetarian but looking at the leeks left over from the winter, she wasn't that fond of the green stuff back then.
