Diana

I met Diana at a public event a few years ago, and we have seen each other often at rallies and protests since then, but until today we hadn’t sat down to talk one-to-one, to hear each other’s stories and hopes. I see her filled with light and energy, hopeful for Portland and the world, humble and aware of her own privilege. She’s a member of the Portland Raging Grannies, and currently she is campaigning for María García for Multnomah County Commissioner because María, an immigrant from Mexico, is an advocate for immigrants and refugees, Black Lives, all who have been incarcerated. María campaigns for the people and social service programs threatened by the current federal administration, and Diana campaigns for María.

Diana and I swapped stories, talked about the work “white” people must do to eradicate racism, identified coincidences of place and people: in New York City, in Massachusetts, in Hawaii, we walked the same streets, knew some of the same people, but in different decades. We’re glad we’ve come together with common purpose in Portland.
