Wound up in Wexford

More building work

In addition to alterations currently ongoing within the department, we're having an extension on the front, with a connecting corridor to the Minor Injuries and Urgent Care Centre.  This is made more complicated due to the bunkers on either side of what was the porch, which are above the linear accelerators and thus cannot be built on.  As we've outgrown our department (built for 70,000, now seeing 120,000 per year), bits have been added piecemeal, taken from other departments that can "spare*" them.  At the moment, to get to MIU and UCC from main reception and the Trolley Bay/Resus area, you either have to go outside, or find your way through the x-ray department.

Our department has also spread in the other direction to encompass a new children's area and older peoples area sited on what was a ward.  This lateral spread has made managing the staffing for both nursing and medical teams quite a challenge, but the much more expensive option of an entire new department built in the current carpark was lost to austerity.  It may still happen, but not in the foreseeable future.

Whilst this work is ongoing, access to main reception is through a hole in the wall.  They've not put a door on this, so the reception area can get a bit chilly!

*  I suspect those other departments might disagree about this.
